February is National Heart Month, and for firefighters cardiovascular health is not just personal, it is operational.
Sudden cardiac events remain the leading cause of line of duty deaths in the fire service, accounting for roughly 40 to 45 percent of firefighter fatalities each year. The combination of extreme heat, heavy gear, adrenaline, and intense physical exertion places enormous strain on the heart.
The Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois encourages all members to take heart health seriously by prioritizing annual physicals, consistent fitness training, hydration, and proper rehab on the fireground. Protecting your heart protects your crew, your family, and the communities we serve.
This month is a reminder that prevention is part of the job.

On February 14th, 1980 at 5:15am, The Brotherhood of the Barrel was born as the membership of Chicago Fire Department Firefighters Union - Local 2 walked out of the firehouses and went on strike.
The last Firefighter Strike in Illinois history played a pivotal role, not just in Local 2's history, but in the fight for collective bargaining rights for all union firefighters in our state. #MakeHistoryHappen
