The biggest story from AFFI's Spring 1979 issue of The Illinois Fire Fighter:
The AFFI's Political Action Committee was established in 1978 at the rate of $1 per member/per month. This new political presence in the state house would be a direct catalyst for future gains in collective bargaining legislation.
Nearly 45 years later, think of the gains the AFFI has achieved because of this initial investment!

It is with tremendous sadness that the AFFI notify you of the sudden passing of Brother Richard Martin. Richard served 32 years with the Murphysboro Fire Department and Murphysboro Firefighters Local 3042. During that time, he served as a trustee of the Murphysboro Firefighter Pension Fund and also served as the Treasurer and the President of Local 3042.

Richard was also elected as the AFFI Southern District Legislative Representative in 2005 and served in that role until 2022. In June of 2022 he was bestowed the title of Southern District Legislative Representative Emeritus. His 17 years of advocacy on behalf of the membership made the AFFI better and stronger.

He will be missed, but never forgotten. Rest Easy bub.

Two members of Downers Grove Professional Firefighters Local 3234, Robert Barc and Scott Kurczewski, were recently recognized by Firehouse magazine for their efforts at separate incidents. In both cases, these members were off-duty but jumped into action.
