What do you think of when someone says the word Union?

Firefighters hired after January 1, 2011 became participants in the Downstate & Suburban Firefighters Pension System as Tier 2 members. The current benefit afforded Tier 2 individuals are significantly less than Tier 1 members enrolled in the Firefighters Pension system. Do you think it is acceptable for new hires to perform the same dangerous job tasks for a diminished retirement benefit?
*
Do you believe government employees should have the right to join a union and collectively bargain a contract? Please explain.
*
The Public Safety Employee Benefits Act requires employer paid health insurance coverage for a firefighter that is “catastrophically injured” in the line of duty and is no longer able to perform the job of a firefighter. Do you believe it is reasonable to require a local unit of government to provide health insurance for a firefighter who becomes injured while protecting his or her community? Would you vote against a bill that attempted to remove or diminish this benefit for injured firefighters? Please explain.

The Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois represents over 18,000 full-time union firefighters and paramedics across the state. Firefighters are currently protected by statute that provides medical treatment and worker compensation for: “Any condition or impairment of health of an employee employed as a firefighter and/or EMT/Paramedic, which results directly or indirectly from any bloodborne pathogen, lung or respiratory disease or condition, heart or vascular disease or condition, hypertension, tuberculosis, or cancer”. Numerous studies have linked these occupational diseases to conditions encountered on the job and experts have determined them to be causally connected to the hazards or exposures of the firefighter’s employment. Do you support this protection that is found within the Worker Compensation Act, and would you vote against efforts to diminish or remove this protection for injured firefighters? Please explain.

Organized labor, the ability to collectively bargain, retirement securities, and the success of the middle class are all vital for the economic and overall health of the State of Illinois. Please explain your stance on a properly funded pension system and how that can be achieved:
