On February 14th, 1980 at 5:15am, The Brotherhood of the Barrel was born as the membership of Chicago Fire Department Firefighters Union - Local 2 walked out of the firehouses and went on strike.
The last Firefighter Strike in Illinois history played a pivotal role, not just in Local 2's history, but in the fight for collective bargaining rights for all union firefighters in our state. #MakeHistoryHappen

Thank you, Chicago Fire Department Firefighters Union - Local 2 & Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois
A life changing event in the history of the fire service in Illinois. Thank you to all those locals from the 70’s and early 80’s for their sacrifices for the later generations.
Thanks to those guys in Local 2 and other Locals throughout Illinois in the late 70s and early 80s we were able to organize in the early 90s and negotiate a great contract. Because of that I was able to buy a nice house, send my daughter to college, and retire in comfort. Thanks guys!

This is just one of multiple reasons for the recruitment issues we are facing. It's a problem everywhere, but as the article states: strategic planning can help meet the growing demands for emergency services as the applicant pools shrink. #affisupports

Communities shift to all-career fire departments as volunteer numbers decline - IAFF

I think it is great that the volunteer concept is going away - there is no other career that people are not paid to do.
One of the biggest recruitment problems in Illinois is the fact that employers want people already certified as BOF/ FF2 and paramedic. The employer doesn’t want to spend the time or money on the employee but expects the future employee to do so. In today’s world it’s not very feasible to do that plus you can’t get certified through the OSFM without being on a roster. So even if you went through an academy you still can’t test because you’re not certified. Maybe departments should go back to no qualifications so that the pool of candidates increases and by doing so will also help organizations possibly deal with diversity issues and lack of candidates. There are a lot of good people out there that don’t get to do this because they don’t have resources available. The other funny thing is many places send their new hires through an academy anyway even though they require them to be certified in order to test. So they’re already spending money and time, just not on the right people.
Good riddance

❤️🩹 Did you know firefighters are at a greater risk of heart disease due to extreme stress, high physical demands, and exposure to smoke? According to research conducted in partnership with the Illinois Fire Service Institute, cardiovascular disease accounts for approximately 45% of all firefighter duty-related fatalities.
During American Heart Month, let’s prioritize heart health through proper nutrition, regular checkups, and stress management. A strong heart saves lives—both ours and those we protect.
